I have a jailbroken iPhone 3G on 2.2.1. and hence I can change most of the sounds it makes to my own custom sounds, e.g. received sms, sent mail, lock, camera shutter etc. I do this by SSHing into System/Library/Audio/UISounds and replacing the sound files in that folder.

One sound that doesn't seem to be in this folder is the beep noise that the phone makes while you are making a call, before the recipient answers. I wanted to replace this beep with the heavy breathing of Darth Vader, if it is even possible. I don't know exactly what to call this sound, hence the somewhat unclear title of this thread. Can anyone help me on this one?

You mean the tone it makes before the person picks up? I pretty sure you can't change that. I would guess that it has something to do with your network rather than sounds built onto the phone. I'm not sure about this though.
