    Is your iPod jailbroken?

if your ipod isn't jailbroken, bring it into an apple store. If it is, then that's a whole different story.

If it is then you could just restore it via iTunes.

Oh, well there's a slim chance of anything happening. And besides if something does happen and he's stuck in recovery mode, then he can just return it to Apple.

I thought that they wouldn't do anything for you if it was jailbroken. He's gonna need a PRETTY VALID excuse for that.

Your right but not if they didn't know. Because if your stuck in recovery mode, the only way to get out it is if you restore, and when you restore nothing is there anymore. If you get stuck in DFU mode then you can return to what you had before. When you try to restore, and it doesn't work, you get stuck in recovery mode.
