    Lockdown can set your phone state to "bricked", so this is probably just a reference to that.
    If you're interested, the elite team has documented all Lockdown states here.

    By the way, what hex editor is this?
    I need to find a good one.

    Perhaps it's a way Apple can track phones that were bricked after the first update but fixed with 1.1.3. I'll bet they would love to know more about how many people had actually hacked their phones to use different carriers. I noticed iTunes keeps asking me if it's OK to send "diagnostic" information back to Apple. Of course I just got a replacement for my defective Touch, so that may be it. But this sure seems like a bit of statistics gathering to me. Not necessarily a bad thing though.
