There's a plugin for 4.0 users called "Remove Recents" which, as stated in the name, removes the recently used apps from your multitasking bar, leaving only truly backgrounding apps present. However, it doesn't seem to work for me. I ran several apps which I know have no native backgroundingand they still appeared. Any help from you iPod touch fans?

Well, guess more apps have native backgrounding than I think.

I wish there was a deviant that just put badges on the running or nonrunning apps. I like having the recents but I don't want to go randomly killing apps in the task bar without knowing which ones will actually free up memory/battery life.

Backgrounder shows badges (if their enabled) for apps that have been multitasked. It even informs you whether they're done with Apple's native method or Backgrounder's foreground oen.
