I'm trying to get onto my school system's AP.
I know what I'm getting into.
I know that it's against the school policy.

With that out of the way, I'm trying to get onto my schools access point and I have a few questions.

I can connect to the Access Point.
Though when I use "StumblerPlus", it shows the Security as WEP, it allows me access when I use a string based key. (Not a-h, 0-9)
Though when I do that, the router doesn't give me an ip (169.x.x.x)

1.) Can StumblerPlus be wrong, or do you think my touch is just allowing the
connection for the fun of it?

I try other hex-based keys, and they don't work.

Also, the case may be MAC filtering.
I can spoof my MAC Address, but I haven't gotten a chance to try that.
I believe that its not going to work without a white-listed MAC.

2.) If MAC filtering WERE on, would it still give me a valid ip if my MAC was on the blacklist?

3.) If MAC filtering is on, then how would I go about finding a whitelisted client MAC that I can use?

Someone mentioned the use of MACaddy, but it looks like that only spoofs MAC's.

Can anyone be of any help with these 3 questions?

(If this is the case of having the WEP(/WPA)? key wrong, then I guess I can get a laptop, USB boot to Backtrack, and crack the WEP from there...)

    Thanks,
    Ian

    hrrmm... ooook?

    Summary
    =======
    Networking no workie.
No IP when connected to AP.

1.)Can a stumber be wrong and say the security is WEP when its WPA?

2.)If MAC filtering was on, and I was on the blacklist, would it give me an IP address?

3.)How do I find a whitelisted MAC address on the network that I could use?

With WEP, you still need a valid key to get an IP - the 169.x IP is a placeholder the iPod gives itself when it can't get an IP via DHCP. So that's issue #1 to deal with. Issue #2 is that it can't figure out WHAT addresses are legitimate if there's MAC address filtering active on the router(s) that service your school network; for that, you'd have to get a copy of the list off the routers in question. Which means physical access to the routers, or getting one MAC address off a known-good device that can connect to said wireless network. Plus, if you're trying to spoof the MAC address, be aware that the router WILL log the time when the IP was given out, so if the person whose MAC address you borrowed tries to get on, they won't be able to, and the network admins know to look for someone unauthorized using the network.

    I'm going to stress this:

If you get found out, you may, in all likeliness, be kicked out.
You're breaking the law. I'd stop it, now.

If he's dumb enough to do it, on his head be it.

Yeah but I'd feel bad if I didn't say anything.

Meh... Its more for proving that I can do it.
Only 1/3 of my school gets some sort of Wireless anyways.
I always like to expand my networking knowledge, but I'm just wondering about some nuances that are annoying.

I doubt they would catch my if they tried (im not going to be an idiot and be caught by packet sniffing)
Our IT staff is useless. The web blocker has been down for 2 days now for the whole school...

SpoofMAC or something similar, in Cydia.
