What happened to Installer? Why's it become so unusable/unused?

Nullriver is good. RiP Dev sucks. Saurik is amazing.

That pretty much sums it up.

Installer on 1.1.x = programmed by NullRiver Software. It was easy to use, it was stable, and it was first, so everyone used it.

Installer on 2.x = programmed by Rip Dev, who deliberately design their products to not work with competing products, who charge $35 for the most basic of features (a book reader, a five-icon dock), and whose Installer has been in 'beta' (and not the Google style beta which works) since Firmware 2.0 came out. Several betas have even caused iPods to go into a SWoD because they won't install things, then crash and kill the system.

Cydia on 2.0 = Programmed by Saurik, and it's been out since practically day 1 of the jailbreak. Everyone's using it as a result (it's there), it crashes itself when it does crash (instead of crashing the whole iPod), and it's fast. Plus it looks a lot like Installer on 1.1.x did, instead of having icons which are a fifth of the size of the screen to load, which means it isn't as 'clunky' as a UI. Even the AppStore's icons are smaller than those in Installer.
