Help With Creating Themes (PNG Query)

    I have been working on a theme for some time now, but progress is fairly slow. I'm using Adobe Photoshop. When I work with icons and such I click Save As, then change the format at the bottom by clicking PNG. Is this correct? Or should I simply change the extension of the file manually by renaming it?

    I ask this question because a few weeks ago I tried adding the theme to my iPod (to preview it) through SSH and managed to crash it, requiring a restore. Granted, I had only completed the wallpaper and a few icons, so this may have been the problem. But I have heard that PNG files taken from themes are originally unreadable, and have to be converted (hence the tutorials on these forums). But my PNG files open with a number of programs, including Preview (I'm on a Mac).

    Note: my iPod crashed when I tried to apply the theme through SummerBoard, not while using SSH.

    Any help would be great!
