i just bought an iPhone 3G and the seller told me it was on 3.1.2 which i know is unlockable but its actually on 3.1.3 which isnt. the bootloader is 5.9. my question is if i downgrade to an older firmware can i unlock it? if not, is there any word on when the new unlock will be out?

I have the same problem as you. I bough my 3g but the guy had to update it, so now I cant use it with T-mobile. But back to your question the answer is no. When you Downgrade the firmware it does not downgrade the baseband. The only way to downgrade the baseband is if you have a 2g or 5.08 bootloader on your 3g. (But the 5.08 bootloader model is very rare because they only made them the first couple of weeks.) But if you have the 5.08 bootloader you can download Fuzzyband from cydia and then it will downgrade your baseband so later you can unlock it with yellowsn0w.

    You can't downgrade.
Apple isn't signing any firmware below 3.1.3
