(help) virus problem on PC (found solution)

so I was doing just fine, just one iTunes (syncing in fact) and all of a sudden at the bottom right corner of my monitor it reads (you are not protected) but the virus program I had was working and that's what my firewall was, and just as you would expect BAM a crapload of viruses hit me and its scaring me

anybody know a good virus protector program that is free or a decent price

I am no computer wizard so please bare with me and help if you can!

my operating system is windows XP

:edit: like I mentioned, I am not too much of a computer wizard, but I was smart enough to turn ON the firewall after it had randomly turned OFF and I scanned my computer via AVG (avg saved my PCs life today)

about 8 threats, phew. thank you PC gods

I use AVG as an anti-virus and uniblue power suite to keep it fast and fix other infections.

the twisted part about this whole story is that I had AVG installed, it was running and it still is (btw Im not using the virus loaded computer right now....) but its like a virus got through the system and just went haywire...

    sucks
