Can I use the Shift+Restore method with the iPhone2,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.ipsw firmware for my iPhone 3GS?

I am currently in 3.x and wanting to update to 4.0.1 to jailbreak.
Will Apple sign the firmware and will it work?

Apple has stopped signing all firmwares except 4.0.2 so you can't unless you have SHSH blobs saved for 4.0.1

I was on 3.1.3 yet for some reason I had SHSH blobs saved for both 3.1.3 and 4.0 So today I updated by adding a line to my hosts file
    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
Then I was able to update and jailbreak with ease XD

Actually I was helping my friend with her iPhone 3GS. She wanted to jailbreak.

I've heard that the 4.0.2 can be jailbreaked with the OLD BOOTROM for iPhone 3GS.

I still dont know if her iPhone is the old bootrom or the new one.

So... no updating to 4.0.1 huh?

If it hasn't been on 3.1.3 then that's true, it'll be on the old bootrom. There are tuts out there telling u how to upgrade without updating the bootrom.

But, I found that the 4.0.1 update was still working yesterday. I hope it continues until tommorow.

^^ hmm. It's worth giving it a shot. If it doesn't restore it'll tell you before it wipes the device so u can always just go out of dfu mode if it says no. Plus if anything strange happens you've got your shsh codes for whatever firmware your on now to downgrade.
