A little more information on your phone would prove useful (2G or 3G).

Also, there are a ton of guides out there to help but again it depends on what kind of iPhone you have.

More than likely you cannot unlock it at this time.

    How old is it?

    Is it jailbroken?

go to settings and post your Firmware Version and your BASEBAND Firmware version.

Buy a Gevey 3G. New iPhone 3G usually runs bootloader 5.09 which eliminates the possibility of downgrading the baseband (2.30) down to 2.28 which is what yellowsn0w (soft unlock via Cydia) is currently capable of running on. You can always jailbreak and check the bootloader version. If it is somehow miraculously running on 5.08 then there is a Cydia app to downgrade the baseband down to 2.28 from 2.30 (assuming your new iPhone 3G is running on 2.2.1/2.30) which allows you to soft unlock the phone. Much easier than dealing with a turbo SIM. They cause some minor issues but is tolerable, just not as nice as using yellowsn0w. But yes, as melterx12 said, go to settings/general/about and check your firmware and baseband. If your baseband is 2.30 jailbreak your phone and go to Cydia and download the app that downgrades the baseband. It will automatically scan and check your bootloader to see if it can downgrade. If not, you're stuck with buying a Gevey 3G (best one out there, I believe).
