Here is the story: about a month ago, I was walking to a 7-11 by me and found a black iPhone 3G or 3GS (can't tell). I turned it in to the police and was told if nobody claims it from them in 30 days, its as good as mine. Well, here I am 30 days later with an iPhone that is giving me nothing but trouble.

I have tried a restore on 2 different PC's and my iMac. I have used a total of 7 USB ports and 3 different cables. One is running Win7, one is running WinXP, and my iMac has 10.6.3.

Every single time, it has to be put in DFU mode again, or the computer won't see it. In other words, every time I unplug it, it has to be put into DFU again. It then hangs on preparing for restore for about 10 minutes, then iTunes throws me error 1601. I have not gotten any other error codes. All my computers have iTunes 9.1.1 (most recent I believe).

    Anything else I can try?

Go on your Mac and re-install iTunes.

Put the phone into DFU mode and then try plugging it in and restoring by downloading a fresh firmware file.

The iPhone is dead with a locked harddrive. My first iphone did this and I had to have apple exchange it for a new one.

You have given nice solution But Sometime It could be happened for some reason of the also device. I think that If He will use other software like Android for their device. It would be more help for further.

Don't throw it out just yet. Maybe iDevicerestore can fix it.
