Try Holding the "Sleep/Wake" button and the Home button for about 30 sec, or till it tells you to connect it to itunes, iTunes will tell you to restore the ipod, do that and then start from the beginning =)

He said it's the restore process that's giving him the error in the first place?

actully you have to do it a diffrent way.

    -connect your ipod to computer
    -open itunes
-hold both sleep/wake button and home button until apple logo appears.
-let go of the sleep/wake button and hold the home button until
    itunes asks you to restore.
