I'm looking to completely wipe the contents of my laptop hard drive. Like completely completely so I can install a new OS. It's a crappy old thing with like 1024MB RAM with a 1600mhz processor and not even 60GB hard drive. I can't go and wipe anything because even though I own the laptop outright and wholly I somehow don't have administrators privilages. I called the help-line and they haven't done squat. Any help appreaciated, and I'm also looking to install something different to windows, but I've no experience whatsoever with linux type stuff. Hackint0sh isn't too appealing either. If i wanted a mac I'd get one.

    thanks!!

Boot into the OS CD and there will be an option to install the OS using the entire hard drive. You don't have to "wipe" a hard drive to install an OS on it.

This. Use it with caution though, because afterwards there's no retrieving any of your data.

I just want more room on the hard drive though because there's only like 4 GB of my stuff and the other 26GB is random stuff I can't delete lol

Use http://www.dban.org/ but make sure you keep anything you want on a flash drive or something because this COMPLETELY wipes ur computer

If it's an XP computer just boot into safe mode (probably f8 or f10 at start up, hit whatever it says to go into boot options) and change the password on the admin account or give your account admin privileges.

I'll give it a try, thanks
Not sure, but I heard Ubuntu is nice and simple so that looks like an option to me. Though it takes fricking forever to download lol

Step 1: Buy 5 very powerful magnets.
Step 2: Lay hard-drive down on table.
Step 3: Put magnets on all sides of the hard-drive.
    Step 4: Wait 15 minutes.
Step 5: Put your hard-drive back into your computer. It will be wiped.

    Or you can just re-format...

I personally have Ubuntu on one of my computers, and it runs great. I don't know what other OS's you have in mind, but if you want something good and free, its ubuntu.
