My 10 yr old saved for a year to buy the Touch. He finally bought it yesterday and the sales person told him about Jailbreak (which we had never heard of before) and explained how to do it. Excited he came home and started. BUT it didn't work. Since 7pm last night he lost everything on the Touch main screen. When you turn it on you see the Apple logo then the screen says (among other things)...
    AppleMRVL868xLoading Main Program
    AppleMRVL868xFirmward loaded version 8.108.3.p65(0x41086c03)
    AppleMRVL868xHardware Details 0x0002 I/O Version
    AppleMRVL868xHardware verson 00012
    Mac Address... 00:1e:52:b1:a3:3=e7
Then the whole screen fills with: BSD root: md0, major 2, minor 0, over and over again. Then is stops there. It's been like this for 25 hours. Needless to say, my son is incredibly upset. Not sleeping, not eating. He didn't even have a chance to play with it. What can we do? We are not technolically savvy. Here are the directions that were given to my son:
YouTube.com>IPod Touch Hack>Version 1.1.4> then he was told to follow the directions from there.

    Please help!

Remain Calm... all is well... assure your young one that it's OK. Second... reading information in these forums is your best idea for the next while...

Since it is new, there is nothing installed on the touch to lose, so you can reset it..

Hold down the home button and the power buttons at the same time. When the apple logo appears, continue to hold the home button (circle with square in the center)... then connect to itunes graphic should appear (symbol of iPod cable connecting to symbol of itunes). Allow itunes to restore your ipod to the latest firmware...

Read here plenty and ask plenty of questions before you try to jailbreak again.

    Good Luck and remain calm

I've personally expernced this problem. this is what to do.

Make sure you have the latest ziphone jailbreak installed. If you don't know then go to ziphone.org and download the newest version which is 2.6b i believe. First restore the ipod and then hit jailbreak on the ziphone screen.

    Broken down peice by peice:

    1. open itunes
    2. plug in your ipod
    3. click restore
    4. download the newest version of ziphone
    5. open ziphone
    6. hit the jailbreak button
    7. Post on here to tell us what happened.

You can use Ziphone to kick it back right to the original state by using the adavanced options. If you give some more details we can give you and easy fix and maybe some tips for your next attempt.

    OK THE EASIEST WAY:
HOLD Power + Home button together untill iPod's screen is completely black (powered off)
HOLD (and keep holding) Home Button while plug in the USB into the iPod while iTunes is running
CONTINUE HOLDING the Home Button untill on the iPod screen it displays a picture of iTunes logo + USB
RELEASE Home Button and check iTunes, it will recognize your iPod now
CLICK, in iTunes, Restore, follow the procedure

you will have a brand new, factory setting iPod Touch
    don't mess this one up

If you want to jailbreak, after restore, give your iPod a name and stop syncing immediately
    to jailbreak
    (GOOGLE TERM: "ZiPhone")
Download ZiPhone 2.6b (check the version has to be right)
Run ZiPhone 2.6b (if you get an error, install Microsoft .NET Framwork 2.0, found on Microsoft.com)
When ZiPhone 2.6b starts, on the drop down menu of Advanced Features, click on Fix VRAM
After it is completely, Click on the super small button that says "iPod Touch" besides Jailbreak
Wait for it to be done.......
There, you have a jailbroken iPod Touch

btw, by jailbreaking, you VOIDS YOUR WARRENTY, jailbreak at your own risk
you can get the warrenty "back" by restoring your iPod to factory setting

    No problem
I feel that you should jailbreak his iPod then let him fiddle around with it
Remember you can still mess up your iPod by installing junk onto it so be careful
