My mate gave me his iPod to fix after it crashed and refused to start.

His iPod shows a battery on the screen, asking to be charged as it is so low. But when we charged it using the computer, it boots up and shows pineapple logo, then freezes on the pineapple logo. None of the computers we have tried his iPod on will recognize it.

    Any ideas??

    DFU mode. Search it.

It is not bricked. Put in DFU mode and restore to a clean stock Apple firmware.

one Q: did the device have a tethered jailbreak? If so you may need to release that.

    A) His ipod is 1st generation.
    B) It won't go into DFU mode.
    C) No computers will recognize it

It will go into DFU mode. DFU mode is hardwired. Keep on trying.

Does the device hold charge? If not then there may be a hardware problem, though if it holds and takes charge it suggests you just aren't trying hard enough to get it into DFU.
