Turning off your Wi-Fi does help save battery life/drainage.

If its draining just by having it in sleep not doing anything, then sorry to say restore it. Worked for me!

Thirdly, open any application (ex: Safari).

Now, hold down the home button for about 6-7 seconds until your iPod returns to the home screen.

You've now closed any applications running as a background process, rather than just hiding them when you press the home button quickly.

Do you have MobileStack or Dock installed? Those murdered my battery when I had them installed. Also, try deactivating everything in Winterboard.

I turned off the wifi and turned off the brightness just to see what would happen and it's still doing it...
