i had the same problem today DONT WORRY all you have to do is send it into DFU mode.... heres how to do it with the situation that your in.
    1) put it in restore mode (hold the home button while you connect to itunes for like 10-20 seconds)
    2) restart it but don't let go of the home button untill it says found ipod in DFU mode in your dock (if on windows) then the ipod should show up in itunes and simply restore...
Note: when you restore you might get a white screen for awhile before the process starts (its normal for this error) then the itunes usb with the ring will go for awhile and so will the first process but after that its very fast.
hope this helps and good luck

Edit: if you cant get it into DFU mode then download ziphone 3.0 and click advanced settings then DFU mode (note your ipod has to be in recovery mode) so it is recognized by itunes and ziphone can find it....

    Don't restore yet!
I had the same problem. Try this:
Hold both buttons till it shuts off then let go. then plug it in and it should turn on. If not then you have to restore.
