How exactly were you doing this?
Try to go into file>import folder(or something like that) and click on the folder you want to import, Aka the music folder

Thats exactly what I am doing but it only allows you to do one song at a time is there a faster way?

    Are you in iTunes 8?
I'm in iTunes now and I click on file while in my library and there is the option "add folder to library..." about halfway down

Click on it and a box will open, find the folder your library is in, probably in user<music or something like that, and select it and click open, then iTunes should import them
if you can't find the folder search for a name of one of your songs and look and see where it is located.
