    ok heres the deal.
I have a 1st gen ipod touch jailbreak it 2.2.1 firmware. few weeks ago it started acting weird. Computers wont detect it and says "usb device malfunction".
I didnt mind it that time for i knew i will upgrade it to the new firmware which is 3.1.2

today i had the chance to do it. so i put the ipod in dfu mode. and tried restoring it to 2.2.1 original to prepare it for the upgrade.

    Here what happened next.
    1. dfu mode
    2. itunes found my ipod
    3. click restore and update
    4. was going all well when...
    5. it stayed on "PREPARING IPOD FOR RESTORE"
    6. bam error 1604

so i got tried it again and again ( three computers in my house are used)

so i decided maybe its just the firmware so i tried going straight on 3.1.2 upgrading. but to no avail!same error.

heres other things that bothers me and frustrates me sooooo much!

*IPOD WONT BE RECOGNIZE on 2 of my computers.
*I tried running RUNME on all of them and all of them dont find my ipod
    * whenever i put it in dfu mode i sometimes get stuck on white screen
    * when i try to update directly the ipod restarts when itunes is downloading update (around 10 minutes in the download it will restart)
    * then if i do SHIFT restore then use any firmware 1604 error or 1603 comes up.
    * iam stuck on the DFU mode i cant open my musics WHEN i turn the ipod on its the "insert to itunes" screen that greets me
    * half of the time it simply wont be recognize by my computer when i go to the universal bus ports in device manager either its unknown or its apple device mobile but has the ! mark on it.
*also when i plug it on the laptop itunes says "waiting for ipod" and stays white screen!

PLEASE IAM BEGGING you guys to tell me what to do

just right i already tried even the FIRST firmware for the damn ipod 1st gen but its the error that i get..

I already wasted my whole day figuring out how to fix it..
watch all the youtubes and read all the blogs about it i could find....

IAM desperate for a great answer...pls...thanks..

try putting into restore mode rather than DFU (restore has the connect to iTunes cable image, DFU mode is a blank screen), if you can kick your iPod touch out of DFU mode that is (there's an app called iFuntastic that apparently will kick it out of DFU, though I've never tried it)...

    thanks for the quick reply...
just for curiosity how do i put it to dfu mode when it looks like its on restore mode?

my ipod is in restore mode right now cuase i see the "plug it on itunes "
but i also got a problem on putting it on dfu mode..

TO PUT IT I HAVE TO
    1. plug it to computer right?
    2. turn it off
    3. when its off i hold the power plus home button 10 secs.
    4. release power button (top button)
    5. continue to hold (home) button for 15-20 seconds?

ok when i do that with the ipod in the computer...ALL of three in my house will pop this balloon in the side " device cannot recognize blabla device malfunciton try instaling again" so the itunes will just not recognize my ipod too leaving me not able to DFU mode rather just restore mode..

iam trying that application right now will tell u if it works.

use a USB port on the back of the computer. also, use another user account on the computer. i've had this issue before and thats all what i did and it worked.

    Try this:
    Uninstall the following:
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
    iTunes
    QuickTime

Now go here and reinstall it.

Once its reinstalled it, try it again.
If it STILL doesnt work, do this:

    ---------------------

    Download this
Its called QuickPwn 2.2 (Yes, I know, its a really old jailbreaking tool)
... However, once you open it, it should kick your iPod out of DFU Mode.

So after you have it downloaded, do this:
    Plug your iPod in.
    Open the file.
A message box should come up, follow the instructions.
If you followed the instructions, your iPod should boot up regularly, in normal mode.

Once in regular mode, just restore in regular mode.
After youve restored in regular mode (which should be succesfull), its up to you whether you now want to DFU Restore or not.

Not easy... you usually have to restore but some 3rd party tools will do it for you.

To the OP: have you tried a different Apple USB cable? That could be your problem...

Yeah, my iPhone cord had a close wire inside I guess or something got really messed up and I wasn't able to do much with it, and I had this same issue on all USB ports.. I then got a new cord, I still use the old one, I stripped it and fixed it, tapped it back up and now it's all good.

Borrow a friends cord, see if this helps any. The cords from the older iPod Video and Nano work with the Touch...
