How to use your iPhone as a USB modem (in Windows)

NOTE: This is assuming that you have downloaded the latest iTunes and you have synced it with your iPhone already. This also assumes that your phone is Jailbroken.

    iPhone Configuration:
Step 1 - Install OpenSSH on your iPhone via Cydia (if not already done so).

Step 2 - Install 3proxy on your iPhone via Cydia.

Step 3 - Install MobileTerminal on your iPhone via Cydia.

Step 4 - Go in to your phone and turn off your WiFi.

Step 5 - Now, open Terminal on your iPhone and at the prompt, type in socks and hit return. It will look like it's hanging there, but that's what is supposed to happen.

    Now to your Windows PC:
Step 1 - Download necessary software:
PuTTY - the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty.exe (This allows you to tunnel into your iPhone via SSH)
iphone_tunnel - http://oss.coresecurity.com/repo/iphone_tunnel-v1.01.zip (This allows you to tunnel into your iPhone via SSH over USB)

    Step 2 - Configure PuTTY -
Open putty and enter in 127.0.0.1 and port 22. Go down to SSH and expand the + sign and select Tunnels. For source port, enter in 1080 and select Dynamic and leave Auto. Hit Add. You should see a D1080 in the forwarded ports section. Keep PuTTY up but leave it for now...

Step 3 - Running iphone_tunnel , You should have iTunes installed and have synced it with your iPhone at least once. Now extract iphone_tunnel to it's own folder. Now go and copy file iTunesMobileDevice.dll that is in your C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\ folder to the iphone_tunnel folder.

Step 4 - Create and run batch
In that folder, right click anywhere and select New -> Text Document. Open it and type this in the text file: start iphone_tunnel.exe 22 22
Save and rename the file: ssh.bat
Once renamed, double click on it and you should get a blank command box.

Step 5 - Connect to iPhone via PuTTY
Now that our USB tunnel is open, connect to the phone over USB. Go back to the PuTTY configuration we left open and select Open at the bottom. In the command window of the batch file you just ran, you should see it make a connection.

Now in PuTTY, you should see your prompt to login. Login with root and your password, default for iPhone is "alpine". If you got this far, you know that your USB tunnel is working properly.

    Step 6 - Setup Firefox

Go into FireFox and set it up to use SOCKS 5 proxy at 127.0.0.1, port 1080. Do about:config in the address bar and filter by socks and change the dns option to true.

    Step 7 - Get online!
Go in your iPhone and make sure 3G is in upper left. Go to a web page to make sure the iPhone is connecting.

Now go to FireFox and open up a website. There ya go! USB modem via your iPhone.

Cool! Free, unlimited internet access for your laptop no matter where you go (depending on your iPhone plan, of course).

a similar guide was posted on how to tether with your iphone. it also work using socks proxy. If you have unlimited data plan it is usefull but I am not sure if AT&T allow the tethering. maybe they can find out if you use too much data.
