Ok, this is what I did

    1. Logged into http://developer.apple.com/iphone
    2. Went to the portal and created a new Ad Hoc distribution profile and selected my iPhone
    3. Created a new development profile and selected my iPhone
    4. Downloaded and installed those on my iPhone 3G (3.1.3)
    5. Downloaded 4.0 beta 4
    6. Opened Xcode
    7. Clicked 'View'
    8. Clicked 'Organizer'
    9. Clicked the down arrow next to 3.1.3
    10. Clicked Other Version
    11. Selected 4.0
    12. Clicked restore
    13. Waited...
    14. Had A cup of Hot Chocolate
    15. Waited...
    16. Ate a KitKat
    17. Completed
    18. Activated
    19. Synced old iPhone Files
    20. COMPLETE!!

    Hope this helps,

    Will

I used iTunes, without Restore Mode, DFU or anything like that...

Just downloaded the ipsw and alt-clicked "Restore", chose the firmware file and waited 10 minutes... done ^^

Not a needed guide IMO. Restore to 4.0 is almost self explanatory process. But it's an okay guide none the less.

If you don't know how to install it then you probably shouldn't have the beta.
