Grr @ Wireless + Ubuntu

    Yeah, uh, Ubuntu is horribly horrible when it comes to wireless. This is my 3rd, 4th computer with this problem. I'm using my macbook to. =p

    Anyways, I have no clue whats wrong, I have no wireless internet whatsoever.

    Dont even talk to me about that.

    I spent like 6 hours yesterday trying to fix it, but to no avail.

    i did it before but i forgot how. I DO KNOW that it took me like 3 weeks

    1. sudo aptitude install build-essential
    2. wget -c http://snapshots.madwifi.org/madwifi-trunk-current.tar.gz
    3. tar -zxf madwifi-trunk-current.tar.gz
    4. cd madwifi-ng-*
    5. make
    6. sudo make install
    7. sudo modprobe ath_pci
    8. sudo modprobe wlan_scan_sta


    I'm going to try this in a few minutes. I got it from a website, so...;\

    Let us know if that worked, I love Ubuntu but switched back to vista because a laptop is worthless with out wifi!!!

    I gave up on trying to use Linux for wireless...I got ndiswrapper to finally work BUT! my connection would D/C every 5-10mins...:\ I'm going to wait till it gets more wireless capabilities

    Get NetBSD for awesome compatibility with practically EVERYTHING.

    Just use brandelf(1) (which should be native to all BSD systems) to 'brand' the Linux binaries for use in BSD.

    Edit: Nvm..saw some screenies...Doesn't look very "pleasing" to the eye. Also Doesn't look like it has much software like Linux does also.. :\

    Ya I just want Ubuntu to work it is good looking operating system. I'm just saving up for a bigger HDD for my laptop so I can duel boot with plenty of space for both OS's

    All BSD systems run command-line by default. You can however install any Window Manager you wish (making your choice far greater). All BSDs also come with brandelf(1) support [as I mentioned], meaning you can run Linux binaries after you brand them. Linux, Solaris, and many other systems use ELF binaries, also meaning that you could run them on *BSD.

    Here is an example of NetBSD with the XFCE environment:
