Nah, it's nothing to laugh at. I have a few Android devices myself, so I know exactly how good a good Android device can get... short of what Android itself lacks. Recently, CyanogenMod added ad-hoc networking to a number of devices, so I couldn't be happier! My mobile office setup is finally compatible with my Android phone. There are some... lack of software that might bother you. Typically, you don't get (any) art app or music app in the Marketplace. The Android Marketplace lacks dedicated developers, so most of the apps you need will have to be written from scratch, or you can hope to find it floating around the internet somewhere... But if you are satisfied with just IM, Twitter, Facebook, Flash, then you're all good to go.
Yea, Android definitely isn't as developed as Apple. But it's coming along, and I forsee it getting better and better as time goes along. I also noticed the market lacks a lot more than Apples, but at the same time there are also some cool things that Android has that Apple doesnt. Like I had said, I am interested in rooting to possibly remove some of the software (that I cant get into and remove). Since the firmware on these chinese tablets were supposedly ripped and copied from an Android phone, there are a lot of components installed on this thing that it can do without. And a lot of unnecessary things that are probably causing it to run slower than it could or cause it to have unnecessary battery drain (I'd like to get it to run an average of 8-9 hours with wifi on instead of 6-7, although standby battery life seems excellent) I need to get more info on rooting, because I don't really know much about it. I also need to research these chinese tablets to find out things that I can safely remove. By the way, I reinstalled LauncherPro and edited it, getting rid of the contacts and phone icons, I love it so much more than the stock one. ...I appreciate your responses, maybe you can offer some insight on rooting if you wish... And slam, I have yet to try an emulators on it, however I downloaded Mario.
Well, on my 2nd week of owning it. Rooted with Z4root. Installed some root apps, such as a terminal, and am enjoying root access... although I still don't know EXACTLY what I am doing. My battery life was less than stellar at first, found out it was the telephony.apks, phone.apks, etc that were causing the battery to somehow drain from "cell signal". It's a tablet that thinks its a phone. Ive done a temporary fix by installing an airplane mode widget. Battery use no longer shows drain from "cell signal". Now my battery life is quite decent. I ordered another charger (US charger) because the European one it came with is crappy, cheap and not UL listed, plus I'm sick of using the stupid adapter. Hoping the new charger will give it a little boost. I'm having fun with it, and I've been doing ridiculous research on Android and the things you can do while rooted. I even managed to wipe the Dalvik Cache, and wipe Battery stats in an attempt to help battery life. I've noticed a slight improvement. I'm sure these have cheap batteries, so getting 7+ hours is okay with me. On standby it seems it could last days. Connection to wifi is great, I've been on it more than my laptop lately, the 7" screen is perfect. And my poor iPod touch has been put on the back burner until I figure this out more. All in all, I'm satisfied. It does exactly what I want for a low price. I would love to have Galaxy or iPad but just cant stand to pay that kind of price right now. This'll do for a while.
Sure ill try to get a vid made. As you can see I ended up keeping it. Originally I was planning on getting the tablet for my mom for Christmas but it turns out my dads getting her a new laptop. I was happy to keep it hah! Plus I let my mom use it and could tell she had a hard time with it. She said she likes using a mouse. Soooo I bought myself a great Christmas gift.
Really interested in seeing some benchmarks, Quadrant, Linpack, Neocore. All free on the market. LCD density changer would be useful on a tablet, since your rooted. You could try SetCPU too, adjust the scaling to save on battery or overclock. CPU might be read only, easiest way to get around it is a custom rom, otherwise you might have to search around to figure out how to unlock it. Autostarts and adfree are musts. Autostarts lets you stop apps from starting at boot (Like telephony and phone and you can stop apps from starting under other conditions. Tasker is pretty cool too. Edit: Forgot Watchdog. It's lets you know when apps are using to much memory or CPU, so you can remove them or disable them. Better then a normal taskmanager. Androids tasking managing is great, it's sh*tty coded apps that slow it down.
Jim, sure i'll try to get a benchmark for you. I actually had setCPU but accidentally set my scaling mhz down low and it was running really laggy, and I wasn't sure how to change it back to the stock specs, so I ended up uninstalling it which brought it back to the normal 720mhz max. But I'll probably put it back on. As you can tell I'm still learning. Being rooted, I'm afraid to mess with something that's going to mess up the OS. But I'm becoming slightly familiar. THANK YOU for all the apps that you mentioned. I'm especially interested in watchdog and and autostart. There are a few apps that open at startup that I'd like to stop, such as dialer.apk, and gtalkservies.apk, as well as the telephony.apks (that would stop me from having to have airplane on all the time, which actually isn't a big deal since it says on, even after rebooting) I gotta say this tablet is worth $140. I think these cheap tablets are really the way to go if you want an Android tablet and are trying to save money. They may be a little buggy from time to time, but I'll deal. Thanks again, any other good root apps you have in mind, please let me know, I want to do some experiments. I can do a benchmark in setcpu, correct?
No problem. You can do benchmarks in setcpu, but the other 3 benchmark apps give a better idea of overall performance. Quadrant is optimized for Snapdragon, but it can still give a good general comparison. Linpack benches the CPU and Neocore is for GPU, Quadrant kinda mashes everything together, including memory and I/0 performance. If I think of any other root apps I'll post them, but those are really all I use. Spare parts might be useful to you. I'm not in the market for a tablet at the moment, but I will definitely keep this one in mind when I am. Thanks for all the feedback on it and enjoy your new toy!
