My friend gave me his "extremely" used condition 3G because he will be getting the 3GS on June 19th. But I have a question; I am currently using my iPhone 2G WITHOUT THE DATA. We are not paying the extra $30/month. In other words, AT&T does not know I am using it. I know the whole SIM card deal and can pop mine into the 3G. My question is will they know I am using it and start charging me for the data? Either way, I will not be using the internet. I do not need it.

I got it with the intentions of working on it, not really to use much. I am just curious.

I put my SIM inside and I got an AT&T message telling me "If you continue to use iPhone 3G 24 hours after receiving this message, AT&T will begin to charge the iPhone Data plan to your bill. If you have any questions, please visit you local AT&T store."

    They know...
I do not even need the internet anyway. Why can't I just use it for everything else?

what you can do is jailbreak it and download the sbsetting. There you can turn of the data plan. Then you should be fine. It should be lablelled 3g and edge i guess.

I thought it'd work fine with a normal AT&T sim, but wow...

It is a normal AT&T SIM. I just don't have the plan.

why would they say that? have they ever said this to anybody else ever before? i've never heard of this problem happening before.

AT&T really seem to be complete assholes. O2 over here are the nicest to deal with and friendliest provider tbh

    Yeah.
    Jailbreak then SBSettings.
    Turn off 3G and Edge.
I used a pre-paid and it used to drain the hell out of my mintues.
So I just cut it off.

I got another message from AT&T. Why do they do this? I don't even need the data. My theory is if I don't use it, why do they charge for it?

I may just turn the data off through SBSettings. Does anybody know if they will still charge me?
