I actually think this is flawed. I think Apple is going to do a lot of damage this year, even with the price being "premium." Next year though, I think they will meet that magic $249 price point, give it a retina display, and completely steal the show.
But damage isn't the same as taking a market. Twenty, thirty, forty dollars isn't much of a difference to spend. But more than $100? Particularly when the lowest end iPad mini is still above $329 (which is a mental barrier for many people - myself included) to purchasing the iPad mini over the Nexus 7 or Amazon Kindle Fire. Plus, it's the difference of having more than a hundred dollars to purchase apps with, or to buy a slightly better built device with more apps.
I think it's as simple as people want an iPad. Apple just gave customers a slightly lower priced option to finally make that purchase. I really don't see these lower priced 7-inch 16x9 Android tablets really taking a big slice of the tablet market as a whole this year. Sure, the price gives them a little breathing room, but I think that's about it. Like you, I don't think it will "take the market," but I think the iPad mini is going to do some serious damage this year. The Nexus 7 is really not all that popular compared to even the $499 iPad, and the iPad mini is $170 cheaper. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't think the iPad mini intends to compete with the Nexus 7-type tablets. I think it's creating its own niche and will beat them anyway.
Well a lot of those "flaws" on competing tablets may or may not be flaws depending on the user. I know this is in general though.
iPad mini is stupid, reason why i did not buy an ipad 2 was money vs features, I mainly wanted retina display but I couldn't afford the iPad 3, now that the refurb came out I thought why not the mini, and the display is all I could think of, I have compared the iPad 2 vs 3 like most of you here, if I got the mini with such a terrible display, it would haunt me forever lol, plus the 4rth gen iPad really is not that impressive over the 3rd gen.
My guess is that Apple is less concerned with the Kindle than they are about short-circuiting Microsoft's plan. The target, in my mind, is the upcoming "Surface" product line. Apple's price point makes it far more attractive than the Surface, IMHO. It's going to be interesting to see how all this goes down. The price of the mini is no barrier to me. My wife is getting one for XMAS. - Max
These flaws of other tablets arent neccesarily flaws. Saying that the nexus 7 doesnt have a tablet optimized OS but the ipad does is kindof crazy. The ipad just hs the same os with minor changes to accomodate for the bigfer screen. The overall layout is the same. The google play store also has many many apps
