I've been using 3ds max for a while and its really good. expensive, but I recommend it. plus you could just use the trial to start off with.

    That's not available for Mac.

Personally, I use Cinema 4D. There's a great rate available for students!
It's incredibly powerful, and can do everything high end mainstream CAD packages can do, only it has arguably the easiest user interface.

That said, it is used in mainstream big budget productions too, so it's industry grade software. Trial available at maxon.net

You've also got Houdini (Apprentice). Now Houdini is insanely hard, but it you can figure it out, you're golden. The free version is immense and insanely powerful. Unfortunately, you're going to spend a lot of time watching tutorials and reading about before you can even light a scene properly. Get Houdini here.

Thirdly, there's Blender. Everyone has heard of Blender ^_^
Open source, runs on everything haha. The user interface however is absolutely awful. Sure, if you can get the hang of it, then go for it! But it's hard.

You've also got high end commercial packages such as Maya which also run on Macs. However, if you have to come on an iPod touch forum to ask which CAD package to use, you're probably not a big budget game company.

Lightwave 3d from Newtek. I have been using it since 1994(version 4.0). current version today is 9.6

Nope, 3D Studio Max is windows only. It possibly has Maya on it?

Downloading Cinema 4D Trial; if Meikura says it's good, it's good.
