i cant say with 100% accuracy that this is true, but almost any 3G you buy from this point in will have been updated to 2.2.1. Which means that with out current software you cannot unlock it.

Wait for the next one coming out next month would be my paramount suggestion.

However, you cannot jailbreak the current firmware version of the iPhone 3G, although if it was possible, then you could use it with any GSM carrier in India.

You can restore to factory settings to get the warranty back.

Your best option is to pick up a 2nd hand or refurbished 3G on ebay, as long as it is running the .28 baseband as this can be opened to all operators with yellowsn0w.

Apparently Apple will have their own chip manufacturing operation up and running in 2010 so that's when we'll probably see major iPhone changes. This summer's new model is rumored to be an iPhone lite which will be running the new 3.0 OS and it may take sometime to crack its new baseband open.

Wait for new iPhone, but I do highly mention the iPod Touch 2G if you are a music person and like to watch movies, play apps and use wifi/Have wifi.

Hey deepan; what part of India are you in?

I work occasionally work out of Andhra Pradesh and use my iPhone there and in Mumbai.

I would recommend finding a 2G iPhone for now. Mine worked great with both Airtel and Vodaphone. I was using a prepay plan with Airtel but had no issues with it.

If you are in the U.S. you might be able to find an unlocked 3G but any 2G would work for you as well.
