my guess is, its more of a "i logged into gmail on my iphone but on my computer it still says that i have 5 unread messages even though i opened them on my phone" type of thing. this way it wont tell you that anymore.

IMAP is server-side mail handling. With a POP client you have to download all of the email to your computer/device. IMAP lets you handle the same mail account across multiple computers. That's its strength. The Touch/iPhone can manipulate the same email as your home computer.

IMAP supports "online", "offline", and "disconnected" access modes.

Gmail's tagged emails will be sorted out and displayed in their own folders.

They just started rolling it out. It's a crap shoot when it will show up on individual accounts. Everybody didn't get it at the same time.
