The problem is an animated gif contains "multiple" images, and the img3 format can only handle 1 image at a time, at least this is to my understanding as of current, now whether or not it will be implemented in the future, I cannot say.

I saw somewhere that 3.0 has an animated boot logo.

    It doesn't.
Also, iPhone OS doesn't support APNG, as far as I know, so it's not possible.

i remember hearing something of this nature... and actually what it is, is that the boot logos aren't signed on the 3.0 firmware.. so its easier to change them. the MAY mean that an animated GIF is possible.. but until the full version comes out and the dev team cracks it.. we won't know.

    See my post above.
iPhone OS does not support the APNG format, so nothing will help.

Well the OS itself has trouble showing gifs on webpages so I can't see it being done in 2.x, maybe in the future.. eventually..
