    Hi, am new here

I just bought a new ipod touch. It's the first gen model, 8gb.

I needed some advice on how to get started. The main things were:

    a) what software to use and if it has to be itunes (no decent alternatives?) then what version?

    b) what firmware should I go for? I want a reliable one, that looks decent, that I can install 3rd party applications to. Not sure on which one though!

    c) what method should I then use to jailbreak it?

    d) what applications are good (and safe) to install, and how do I go about getting and installing them?

Also, is there anything I should do before starting?

At the moment, I haven't done anything with the touch. Can't turn it on because I haven't synced it with my PC yet as per instructions, wanted to get as much advice as I can before I get going.

Thanks to anyone who can help

    Hey AV.
My first advice to you, would be to check out the PDF file created by the lovely SpoonForKnife which illustrates the basic uses of an iPod Touch that Apple don't tell you about. That can be found here:

I'd get iTunes 8.1 personally - It seems the most stable.

Everything else you've asked is in SFK's PDF file.

Hope this helps - If not post again asking more!

    Awesome, thanks for that.

A problem I'm still having, I figure firmware 2.1 is the best one to go for.

However, I see that you can't use winpwn to jailbreak 2.1 and it seems PwnageTool is only for the mac?

I'm on XP, how do I get around this?

    Thanks.

Also, that guide is excellent for applications, firmware, etc but not so much on using it initially with iTunes, turning the touch on, etc.

Also, seems that iTunes 8.1 doesn't work with the jailbreak for firmware 2.1?

Does your iPod have volume controls on the side?

    Ok then, good

    1) iTunes is the only application able to sync an iPod Touch running 2.x to a computer at this time. The newest is iTunes 8.1

    2) 2.1 is easily the best choice. It's one of the fastest firmwares, has the App Store, has Cydia, and is beyond stable.

    3) QuickPwn

    4) All are safe. Some I'd recommend:

    WinterBoard
    PocketTouch
    MxTube
    Stacks
    Categories
Terminal (as a failsafe, you need this installed to fix problems)
    MobileFinder (same as above)
    BossPrefs
    Make it Mine
    Dock

Just look around. There are tons of great things in Cydia.

My most recent problem is that I'm using Windows XP SP1. I thus can't use iTunes 8.1, have installed 7.32.

Also, when I try to run quickpwn, nothing happens!

Well, 7.32 isn't gonna cut it.

Upgrade to SP3, it's not that hard.

I have upgraded to SP2 now, I figure that should be sufficient.

Never liked SP2 in the past - whenever have used it in the past, something goes wrong and I have to format. I hope that it's not the case now!

Should all run easily now? Should I sync my touch to itunes first before updating firmware and then jailbreaking?
