    Why?

When you press the sleep button, it wouldnt go to anything.
Your battery would drain 100 - 0 percent in an hour.

There wont be any cool slide 2 unlock that people envy.

    You sir... are slightly retarded

No, you aren't slightly retarded. This could work: the sleep button would lock it, but when you turned it back on, it would jump to the home screen instead of the lock screen. You could lose some battery life if you accidentally pressed a button in your pocket because your iPod would have to autolock, and would use battery during that time. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure there's currently no way to do this.

Mind your language, please. Agreed you may know a lot, but that does not give you the license to label others.

Lets keep this neat and clean. Sickfee, I believe you have a good idea. I'm sure it could work out......I'd almost give it a try when it comes out.

iTouchGuru apparently doesn't have anything better to do than flame people. What is amazing is that he's only been here a month & is already being rude, unhelpful, condisending, and pretty much useless.

    find something better to do.

FYI, the idea has merit. One of my 2G's is in my car (hooked up using Bluetooth

I don't really need a lock button for it. It is an open area & the lock button has no practical value. I would love to touch the home button & not have to go though the additional step of unlocking the ipod.

Any other useless flaming ipodtouchguru (and you call yourself a guru?)
