I had 7.01 GB free space on my 8GB iPod. But after jailbreaking it on 2.2.1 i got 6.82 GB available space. BTW now i am planning to update to 3.0 only when the JB is out. Please advise me what to do to get my lost space back when i update to 3.0!

Themes, applications, Cydia, itself, etc. take up space.

well the jailbreak adds more data to your ipod like cydia and some other crap so that might be where it went?

If its jailbroken, you need some place to store all the jailbreak data right? 0.o

The extra space missing is from the jailbreak. It actually may or may not be used, but I think it partitions your memory so it thinks it's missing that memory. Anyway, if you unjailbreak your device before upgrading I think that should restore the space back.

That's right. I'm almost positive that Cydia bumps the OS partition up to 500MB.

I just upgraded from 2.2.1JB to 3.0, and had a slightly similar problem.

Somehow, I cleanly upgraded from a JB'd firmware to 3.0, but the caveat was the taken space of what JailBroken items used to be there, like a bunch of MXTube downloads. So, from the get-go, I had 50mb left of space to do anything.

To fix this, I decided to lose everything and go into DFU mode and restore back to 3.0 again and now I have maximized space, and moving everything back in, except the JailBroken stuff again.
