I am trading for an iPhone 8GB, 1st generation. It is not activated with AT&T. If I use it as an iPod and ignore the phone part of it, do I need to worry about basebands or anything? Also, but less important, does that mean I can get 3.0 for free because it's an iPhone?

    Thanks

You're wrong. I have an iPhone 1st gen with TMobile Prepaid Sidekick plan, and as long as I have more than 1 bar...it loads regular sites within a few seconds.

It's not to use as a phone or even with the EDGE network... it's for use as an iPod and as a camera. It also has a faster processor than the iPod 1G.

Using an iPhone as a glorified iPod Touch really isn't worth it. If you have AT&T or any other GSM SIM network(such as O2 or T-Mobile), jailbreak and unlock your iPhone and install SBSettings. From there, disable EDGE. You will still be able to call, text, and use WIFI, but all data transmissions will be blocked. That is if you don't want to pay the extra for data each month.

Don't thank me for that. DrewGzy told me how to do most of that

As for using as a camera you're out of luck. The camera is TERRIBLE. My old LG Venus' camera owns my iPhone's in every way.

You cannot get 3.0 for free until it is released, it may cost money.

I know, but for iPhone users it's a free upgrade. So even if I don't use AT&T, I'm hoping that it'll be free.

I like the 1g, the size is nice and in my opinion, the look is way better and it's better for people on the move, by that I mean it's aluminium build is more durable and can withstand most shocks the 3g can't, ie. The back of the 3g is plastic so it cracks when dropped. But when the 1/2g is dropped at worst it will dent.
