Musclenerd just posted a way to get into DFU mode without pressing any buttons on your device; so it will also work for devices with broken Home and/or Sleep buttons.

    Source: http://twitter.com/MuscleNerd

So, download an official ipsw for your device, open the file with WinRar or a similar program, browse to Firmware/all_flash.XXXXX.production, delete the file LLB.XXXXX.RELEASE.img3. Then extract applelogo.XXXXXXXX.img3, rename the file to LLB.XXXXX.RELEASE.img3 (the name of the file you deleted in the step before) and add the file back to the ipsw. Then try to restore with iTunes using this modified ipsw (shift-click restore).

I did not try it yet, so any comments whether this actually works are welcome.

sounds good but how do you use your ipod with broken buttons? sounds like a hassle to get out of programs or to put it to sleep

There is an app for that called mQuickDo (of course only for jailbroken devices), this app can "press" the buttons you need in the touch screen.
