Is there anyway to check if they might become $$$ apps before hand so you could download them?

Not really, unless you contact the developer, or catch a tip from their description (like Air Sharing said "Free for a Limited Time Only!").

TUAWB (The unofficial Apple Web Blog) will sometimes post about apps you should download because they become paid soon.

    No.
You're not the only person in the world.
If you don't like an app, 5 people will and appreciate the developer's effort in making it.
I hate the wankers that review iTunes apps:

"This used to be free - Don't buy!" and give it 1 star. As if we're supposed to be rating stuff by the way the developer thinks. Just because you're upset that you didn't get it while it was free, doesn't mean you have to take it out on the developer.
