Sorry, tried it, done it... It WILL crash and disable your USB drives within a week or two after doing it. The Mac will detect that you have messed around with the system files and disable it... Without USB, your mouse and keyboard don't work... Which means restore your Mac! Do not do it...

What's the deal with this. I am on a new Mac with 10.5.6 and can't put my device into DFU. Is there another fix or what?

Well, u were supposed to backup the original 10.5.6 ktext file, i used the terminal method, it is a lot safer!
here's another fix but involves modifying the osx.

the original IOUSBFamily.kext came from my Mac running on 10.5.5, DFU tested and working.

    - download this file:http://www.[PIRACY.mf].com/download.php?zlyq1eyn1inand place it to your download folder. if browser is safari, itll be in the Downloads folder automatically..

(copy paste the bold text in the terminal window)

    - fire up terminal and type sudo -s (enter your password)
    - rm -r /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext (this will delete the original file so i suggest you back it up first)
    - mv /Users/User/Downloads/IOUSBFamily.kext /System/Library/Extensions (replace user (text in red) w your macs username)
    - sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext
    - sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext
    - rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
    - as an extra precation you can run disk utility and repair permission (optional)
    - reboot

now you can DFU on mac osx 10.5.5/6 unibody or not.. enjoy!

Leopard will still know you messed around with the system files and will eventually disable USB... My Mac lasted a week or two before bumming out... Don't do it unless you want to restore leopard back to 10.5 with the disk... It's not fun, trust me...

So if I just download and install the MacOSXUpdCombo 10.5.6, will that do the trick?
