based on my observation people who experience redsn0w crashing are on vista, more probably on 32-bit versions. mine kept crashing last night and i've finally jailbroke my device just a few minutes.

    here's what to do:
    1. right click on redsn0w.exe and click properties. select the compatibility tab and let it run on windows xp service pack 2 and click okay.
    2. right click redsn0w.exe again and run as administrator.
    3. do the jailbreaking process and it should work, well it worked for me.

    good luck guys.

I think it might be crashing because there's no internet connection.
This is what happened to me when i tried redsn0w on my xp computer.
I didn't have the drivers installed, when I installed them it worked flawlessly.
So check if redsn0w.exe gets internet access, also check your firewall settings.

I had this happen to me also some of the things i tried
that seemed to work are place the ipsw file in the same folder
as redsn0w, make sure iTunes is closed, and i placed the device in
DFU mode myself not how the app tells you to (if you need help with entering
    DFU mode search IPTF)

Ugh.. I either get a redsn0w crash or if that doesn't happen I get the annoying black screen after the "jailbreak"..

Why can't the Dev Team release the exploit or whatever it is so we can create a custom IPSW and restore to that? It's obvious there are tons of people who can't get redsn0w to work because it's way too unstable at the moment..
