If you're getting a black screen and it says the device has failed, there IS a way to fix it. I've been trying for 5 hours, and I realized that I simply have my timing wrong resetting it to DFU mode. So do this:

    1) Open iTunes
    2) Plug in iPod, let it say the device is failed
    3) Hold down Power and Home for TEN seconds, and DON'T let the "Device Failed" thing pop up again (count to ten!!!!!)
    4) Let go of Power but keep holding onto Home....... and voila! It will be recognized!

Hope this clears things up: just remember, all you need to do is get the timing correct.

I confirm this. You must have iTunes open.

This method works. I did it earlier today when I was experimenting.

Also, in my case, hitting "restore" gave me an error so I simply loaded the ORIGINAL (not custom) firmware and now it's back to factory settings so I can try it all over again.

not to be rude, but you must not have itunes open , just hold down those 2 buttons ad wait for the error message to dissapear then release the power button and keep holding the home button for like 10 sec and thats it, its in dfu mode, i do this every time i reboot my jailbroken ipod, have done it 30 times now i think, mostly to test differnt batch files to boot the itouch quicker
