lol thats the long way..., its really simple
i followed this thread from step 7
    http://www.ifans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137843
basically have ur ipod in dfu mode, patch ur ipod with ibss211.dfu, then unplug and replug ur ipod to get the white screen, do irecovery.exe -s, then type this code in order
    arm7_stop
    mw 0x9000000 0xe59f3014
    mw 0x9000004 0xe3a02a02
    mw 0x9000008 0xe1c320b0
    mw 0x900000c 0xe3e02000
    mw 0x9000010 0xe2833c9d
    mw 0x9000014 0xe58326c0
    mw 0x9000018 0xeafffffe
    mw 0x900001c 0x2200f300
    arm7_go
    arm7_stop

close out of command prompt, then restore ur ipod with the patchedfirmware and it should work without any errors.

    :) I'm glad it worked!

For most people that doesn't work, the whole reason they got the error is because they followed a guide like that ;)

Basically what my guide allows you to do is get into recovery mode and set auto-boot to true, while at the same time booting into homescreen.

I'll work on a Mac version but I'm not sure about 10.4.11, you probably need the ported rslite101u.zip and libusb. I'll pm you once I get the Mac guide up.

    Also: I'd love a sticky
    :)

Actually I got the error message again the first time I retried. Now I'm gonna try at again, I was mostly happy that there was a way to easily restore my iPod in case there was no way to get the tethered to work. :)

I think where I went wrong is on this step:

Am I supposed to "Set up as a new iPod"? or "Restore from backup of "[My iPod]"?
In the second case, I don't have the option to upgrade the ISPW first.

for anyone who is having this error try using cyw00d. it worked perfectly for me after getting the 160x error a zillion times using redtool.

Set up as new iPod, although some people report it working as restoring from backup, and some don't, but just to be safe set up as new.

Anyways, I think it's too bad some people are still having this error, all I can say is keep trying. Especially since this worked for me =\
