    I'm getting Windows 8 right now! I had a friend demo it for me on his oooold laptop and it worked beautifully, and my latop is fairly new so I'm very excited!

    The desktop is there. You just can't install anything except apps from the Windows Store.

    Windows RT has the desktop, but it only allows use of the built-in Microsoft desktop programs (see this for details). It does not, however, support 3rd party desktop programs (designed for x86/64-bit processors).
