I would say go with a simple version of java. Tho c++ is a little simpler. Java let's you learn a little more theory. if you go with java then I would get the official java package and use the NetBeans IDE. BlueJay is another cool IDE but I would learn it on NetBeans first.

Very simple and it works. Hope you learned something more valuable than just cout and cin.
But seriously, start out with java. forget vb, and gradually ease yourself in C/C++ when you get really comfortable with Java. And remember, .net is pointless

Everyone should learn machine language and assembly code. But thats just my opinion. Then you can learn java then C++. But i only say Java, because C++ simplifies some of the things you can do in Java. Learning Java first lets you understand the ins and outs of programing a bit.

    IMPORTANT NOTE

If you are just starting to program, don't bother with these. (yet). You will very likely find them too difficult to understand at first. And your experiences may put you off further programming. This is why I think visual basic is a good starting point, its so darn easy that you can get to grips with programming concepts without all the preliminary work involved in making (GUI) apps in other languages.
