Can a firmware file really be 57.64 MB? Im downloading the 1.1.4, need to downgrade, having a lot of problems with 2.1

1.1.4 is small because it doesn't have many features, the more advanced a firmware is the bigger the file size.

Just update to 2.2 and you'll be fine. Unless you were on Jailbroken 2.1. That thing could have given you some problems depending on what you did.

Then open one yourself? You don't need a Credit Card for it. And its really easy to do. Look, even APPLE tells you how: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534

Do you not see the "None" option? You can still pay for Firmware, Apps, Media via iTunes Gift cards.
