The new 2.0 firmware comes out on July 11th. You can stay on 1.1.4 or update to 2.0

It won't become non operational in any respect. You just will no longer be on the newest firmware

July 11th is the speculated release of Firmware 2.0, along with the confirmed release of the 3G iPhone.

This doesn't affect the iPod touch what-so-ever.

You can stay on Firmware 1.1.4 or upgrade to Firmware 2.0 for $9.95.

Firmware 1.1.4 can be jailbroken, while the Firmware 2.0 to be released can't at this time.

Well 2.0 will offer various upgrades including the much awaiting app store which is like a substitute to installer/cydia, but some apps will cost money.

2.0 is a whole different story (hence the 2.x instead of 1.x.x). The AppStore (which opens up the mobile gaming, education, etc.) will make the iPod tocuh/iPhone a necessity to business employees, students, teachers, and many more.

The developers have done a fantastic job with apps in 1.1.1/2/3/4 with what they could. With the new and simplistic SDK apps can be created quickly and efficiently.

If you really want to see what's in store, watch the WWDC 2008.
