Dynamic Animated Wallpaper with Winterboard! [updated 2/8/09]

*NOTE* Yes, I know animated wallpapers have been done before, but I don't recall WinterBoard being used for those.

Well, after many hours of work, i have an animated wallpaper to show you guys. As a massive fan of the mario games, i chose to make a mario wallpaper, where mario walks from one side of the screen to the other, with a cloud moving slowly the other way. This was achieved by making a Wallpaper.html file, with some clever javascript to animate the scene. It also does not seem to affect processor usage much, which is a bonus (my previous attempts made flicking from one homescreen to another almost impossible).

    So, to use it:
    1) Download the Theme
    2) SSH into the Themes.XXXXX folder on your ipod
    3) Enable through winterboard.
    4) Enjoy!

Dont mean to be a bummer but the Saurik theme in winterboard already does this.

He just has 2 images fading between each other on a rotation. Get lots of images and speed the rotation up, remove the fade and you have your animation

    2 things:
    1) Doing that KILLS the processor, because even unchanged elements in the scene have to be redrawn
    2) it only allows predefined frames to occur

my method is not only easier on the processor, but it also allows dynamic events, because of the way it's coded.

look at the source and see for yourself.

    Edit:

put it this way - my animation would take over 1000 frames of your method to reproduce, with significantly lower performance.

My method just uses a 3-frame GIF, and some JavaScript to shift the cloud and the character around.

Very nice. I can't wait to see what backgrounds people come up with now.
