my suggestion is to keep things simple. when you are trying to convince people that an added or modified part of an image/movie is real, the more complicated the object the more difficult it usually is to create that realism. Same thing with effects. (fire, explosions, etc)

so you'd be better off with a simple object, such as a cliche flying saucer, and then spending more time making sure the object has realistic materials, proper lighting, and convincing animation.

For that kind of visual effect, you'll be wanting to fake vignetting. That's the dark corners around the edges. Shouldn't be too hard if you create a mask in PS, and overlay it onto the video. You'll also want some grain added too, grayscale noise.

Finally, for your visual effects, keep textures simple, but use strong shadows. Ambient Occlusion is a must. It'll increase render time, but it'd work really well. I'd recommend PS to create the your static visual elements, a video editor like Final Cut (or equivalent) to piece them together, and Cinema 4D to create your 3D elements.

Really depends what style you're going for really. Personally, an alien theme would work really well with gritty realism. So your camera is a hand cam, and lots of action. Think District 9, that's personally my favourite approach to this kind of film making. The only problem is you need high-resolution 3D skills to pull it off, which you probably won't have.
