a hard drive is not a hard drive.

some are crap to begin with, some are good, some crap out within 1 month.
    i need one to last.

    cant make up my mind.
    any help is appreciated.

Seagate are generally good and last for a long time.
iomega are also good because they mostly use seagate disks.
LaCie are terrible. They break down all the time.

I used to work in a computer hardware store so I have some experience.
9 out of 10 crashed external hard drives we got in was a lacie.

I have a Western Digital and I haven't had any problems with it in the year and a half that I've used it.

I have 6 hard drives and they all work. Oldest one is 3 years. Just take care of it and it'll be fine.

ok that is some good reassurance. it seems like the seagate is the one to go with, since i can also get a dock.
so that might be the one.

really? i saw a lot of bad reviews.
hmmm... Western Digital is one of the biggest brands though.. thanks!

With WD it's all about luck. For some they lasts for years, and for others they break down quite a lot.
I don't know for sure but I've heard from trustworthy sources that it's an uneven manufacturingprocess.
Low quality get's mixed in with high quality.
That's why there's plenty of bad reviews but still plenty of people recommending them.

I just bought a Seagate a few weeks ago and it works great. No problems at all. I even run a few programs right off it.
