I have tried many times to jailbreak and I get the same result every time.

Everything is good, white screen, then black and white again, iPod boots up and then this happens. The iTunes icon and the plug are on the screen, which means I'm in recovery mode. Except iTunes doesn't recognize it. Help?

Have you successfully restored from the custom firmware?

the iTunes icon doesn't necessarily mean it's in recovery mode, it usually needs to sync before you can use it.

Well, it successfully restores from the pwned 2.2.1 and then the iTunes icon comes up. And I can tell its not in recovery mode actually, and iTunes now recognizes it and wants me to set it up. So I set it up as a new iPod but there is no Cydia to be found.

That means the pwned ipsw you used doesn't contain Cydia.
