I've recently bought an iphone so i've sold my ipod touch 3rd gen to a mate. It was jailbroken with blackrain (teathered), so he asked it i could restore it for him. I opened up itunes and hit restore and the screen went blank. Itunes extracted the software and started to 'prepare ipod for restore' but it just gets stuck on this. Eventually a box comes up saying 'the ipod could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1601)

As soon as i connect the ipod to my computer itunes says 'it has detected an ipod in recovery mode'

I've downloaded 2 ipsw. files: ipod3,3.1.1 7C145-restore (my ipod came with 3.1.1 on it) AND ipod,3.1.2 7D11-restore (which my ipod was on when it crashed)
If i try to do a 'shift restore' all i get is the ipod could no be restore because the firmware is not compatible?

NO MATTER WHAT I TRY, THE SCREEN IS ALWAYS BLACK (AS THOUGH ITS NO EVEN POWERED ON)

    Download only from iTunes.

    Uninstall iTunes. Redownload. Reinstall. Retry.

    DFU restore.

One of these will (hopefully) solve it.

No matter what i do, itunes says 'it has found an ipod in recovery mode' but still doesnt let me do a standard restore or shift restore. If my screen is blank/black, doesnt that mean i'm already in dfu mode?
