So, you have a 32 GB iPod Touch 2G running OS 1.0.1. Interesting. That may be the issue, but I think it is more to do with the hashing not finishing reliably. Some can on Windows, others can't.

It has something to do with iTunes when the pre-restore patch is applied.

I got rid of my error 6 by using the default logos instead of my own.
Next time just use the normal apple logo file and it should work.

To get past Error 6, you need to be in a certain recovery mode before you can flash the run_rs.ipsw. The recovery mode you need to be in is this: Boot your iPod so that you are on the slide to unlock screen. Restore your iPod with your pwned 221 firmware (normal tethered) from there. iTunes will attempt to restore your iPod, your iPod will shut off, and then you will have to force quit iTunes. Then boot your iPod like you would with the tethered jailbreak. (Using a booter or manually) then it'll boot into iTunes recovery mode. Now flash run_rs.ipsw. (Credit: johnnyfranks67) Continue whatever tutorial you are suing after that. That worked for me on my Mac. Not sure about Windows but give it a go.

wouldn't restoring with the original tethered delete all my apps?

No, because the iPod shuts off instantly, and iTunes never gets past "Preparing to Restore"
